All About Scholarships

There are many (many!) scholarships out there. Finding them, understanding eligibility, and applying takes some work and research. Let’s learn about types of scholarships and how to get them!

Types of Scholarships

There are several types of scholarships available, each with their own unique criteria and eligibility requirements.

External Scholarships

These scholarships are offered by organizations outside of the college or university, such as corporations, foundations, or government agencies. They could be based on many different factors, such as academic achievement, community service, or athletic ability.

Institutional Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded by colleges and universities. They may be based on academic merit, financial need, or other factors. Institutional scholarships may be renewable for multiple years as long as the student remains eligible.

Location-Based Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students based on their geographic location. They may be limited to students from a particular state, region, or even country.

Interest-Based Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students based on their interests, hobbies, or career aspirations. They may be related to a particular field of study, such as STEM or the arts, or may be related to an extracurricular activity, such as sports or music.

Identity-based Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students based on their identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. They are designed to support and promote diversity and inclusion!

Military Scholarships

There are several scholarships available to students who are serving or have served in the military. Children who have parents or caregivers who are or were in the military are also often eligible.
